Having coached many sales and non salespeople who had to make cold calls as a part of their job or business, the majority did not like doing it. Usually it was because they lacked the specific phone skills or confidence. Or other times, they have had a bad experience. But, I’ve also seen people who eventually started to enjoy picking up the phone and making sales calls, once they experienced having better conversations.

If you’re selling to businesses, many times it’s not easy to reach the handful of decision makers in a bigger organisation just through digital marketing alone. So, picking up the phone is a must. Although making sales calls is important, it’s essential to be aware that cold and warm calling should be a part of your outreach business development strategy, not the sole strategy.

Now let’s talk about why some of your cold calls could suck. There are many reasons why you may struggle to keep a prospect on the phone when making sales calls. Some things are beyond your control. Such as calling when the prospect is busy, or when they genuinely don’t have a need. However, there are some things that we can do that are within our control to help us increase the odds of keeping them on the phone. This is done by grabbing their attention, creating curiosity, and engaging them in a conversation.
